The Esport, what is this?
"eSports" is simply the short name for electronic sports. This phenomenon is born around the 2010's and has since never stopped to earn reputation and audience. Basically, it's a video game that is played on a
professional level, often with a huge spectatorship. The reward for the competitor is a cash prize reaching sometimes very huge amounts.

What does 'esports' actually mean?
The majority of popular esports are team-based games played in leagues
or tournaments throughout the year, culminating in one final event.
What is common between Esports and sports competition is that people are practicing an entertainment at a professional level and are watched all around the world by a huge audience.
What is the main difference which for me one of the key reason of its success is that anyone can just try any games played by Esports competitors. While in comparison not everybody can practice all sports for various reasons as a lack of time, means, money...
Anyone can just try the games played by people they admire and like to watch and feel like they are sharing the same experience. Also Esport games can usually be played with friends, that can also be fan of Esport...
What sort of games can be seen in Esport?
Any game making a loser or a winner in a limited time. Esport games have to be quick, easy to understand for any type of public.
Two kind of games have been particularly highlighted during the past 10 years:
The MOBAs: Multiplayer Online Battle Arena which consists usually in 2 teams of 5 players facing each other to win a game that last for around 30 minutes in a small "arena". Also, the scene is watched from the top just like if you were watching football. The most famous game of this kind is League of Legends a game created in 2009 that is now attracting an audience of 45 million (and 100 million of players a month).
The FPS: First Personal Shooters are games with teams of usually 4 or 5 players. The viewers are watching the scene from the first person and only see what one of players sees, for last part "shooter" this simply refers the player usually got weapons. This kind of game might be harder to understand for someone who has never watched Esport. Counter strike Global offensive and Fortnite are 2 of the main games nowadays.
A fun fact is that sport games are also included in Esport Game as for instance FIFA for football...
Also, in 2018, North Korea has officially recognized Esport as one of trial of olympic games.
Where can I watch all of this?
The Esport usually takes place physically in big stadium but the places are very limited. Some games as League of legends tried to counterbalance that by inviting people to watch it in live in cinemas all around the world.
Otherwise, the most common way to watch it is on the streaming platform Twitch and Youtube, Twitch does even permit you to make your research by game. For any tournament the information about the key dates and hours should be available on the official website.
Some games as Leagues of legends offer a streaming of their tournament on their own website with exclusive rights.
What esport should I watch?
What I would advise a beginner in Esport to do would be to first watch professional of the entertainment on video games, which is a part of youtubers. It will permit you a better understanding of the main games and their functioning.
On the other hand it is worth noting that on the main Events, commentators (called castors in Esport) will explain what's happening through the live tournament.

As a lay-person I now know a bit more about e-sport ! It's a very good approach of this topic ;)
